Traverse® Overview
The Traverse Family of Multiservice Transport Switches delivers new levels of versatility, reliability and performance to multiservice transport networks by enabling carriers and other service providers to increase bandwidth capacity, packet optimize their transport networks, and deliver new Ethernet/IP-based services more rapidly and efficiently. The NEBS-compliant Traverse platform provides aggregation, switching and transport of Carrier Ethernet and TDM services from a single carrier-grade chassis. With scalability up to 95 Gbps per shelf, the Traverse is optimized for metro networks and high capacity aggregation sites in central offices, colocation facilities and service hubs.

A Versatile, Packet-Optimized Platform

The Traverse platform is a versatile system that can be deployed in any combination of linear, ring and mesh topologies, and is provisionable to deliver any mix of MEF-compliant Ethernet over fiber (on-net), Ethernet over copper/PDH (off-net), as well as legacy TDM or optical services. A wide variety of service connectivity options are supported ranging from 10/100 to 10Gbps Ethernet, DS3/E3 and DS1/E1 TDM, and OC-3/STM-1 to OC-192/STM-64 interfaces. Advanced optional Layer 2 switching and QoS traffic management features enable the delivery of Ethernet services that meet stringent service level agreements (SLAs).  Scalable digital cross-connect capabilities (DCS/DXC) can also be integrated in the Traverse shelf as an option. The Traverse platform’s distributed switching architecture reduces costs and speeds time to market for new services by allowing the system to be optimally configured for any combination of services and application.

Traverse 10 Gigabit Ethernet Service Interface Module


The Interface Module Integrates non-blocking 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching and transport into the Traverse®
platform. The 10 gigabit Ethernet Service Interface ModuleFull featured Ethernet switching including VLAN
Carrier-Class Protection switching, MAC-based switching, and granular traffic policing and shaping for CoS/QoS.



Traverse Ethernet over PDH Service Interface Module


The EoPDH Service Interface Modules for the Traverse multiservice switching and transport platform offer the
industry-leading solution for multiservice transport with Ethernet service delivery over fiber and copper PDH access networks. The Traverse platform supports any combination of Ethernet, SONET/SDH, or TDM circuit grooming, switching and transport in a single shelf. This versatility enables network operators to leverage their existing infrastructure as they transition to a multiservice, Carrier Ethernet network at their desired pace.



Traverse NGE Ethernet Service Interface Modules


The NGE 10/100/1000 Mbps Service Interface Modules for the Traverse® platform position support
any combination of Ethernet, SONET/SDH, or TDM circuit grooming, switching and transport in a single shelf. This versatility enables network operators to leverage their existing infrastructure as they transition to a
multiservice, Carrier Ethernet network at their desired pace.



Traverse VT-HD Switch Module (40G)

The VT-HD switch module integrates wideband/low-order switching and grooming functions directly into
the Traverse Multiservice Transport Switch to create a scalable and economical alternative to replacing or
upgrading legacy cross-connect systems. A single Traverse VT-HD Switch Module provides 40 Gbps of
VT1.5 cross-connection capacity (21504 VT1.5 terminations) in a single Traverse 2000 shelf. Two VT-HD
Switch Modules can be installed for equipment protection in this 40 Gpbs non-blocking wideband switching
solution (768 protected STS-1 equivalents). This fully integrated DCS and SONET transport solution
simplifies carriers’ networks, while providing dramatic scalability and cost advantages over legacy
DCS architectures.



Traverse VT/TU Switch Module (5G)

The VT/TU Switch Module integrates wideband/low-order switching and grooming functions directly into the
Traverse Multiservice Transport Switch to create a scalable and economical alternative to replacing or
upgrading legacy crossconnect systems. A single optional Traverse VT/TU Switch Module provides 5
Gbps of VT1.5 and/or VC-11/12 crossconnection capacity (2688 VT1.5 or 2016 VC-12 terminations). Or,
leveraging the Traverse platform’s distributed architecture, multiple VT/TU Switch Modules can be installed
to enable in-service scalability to 20 Gbps of non-blocking wideband switching capacity (384 protected STS-
1 equivalents) in a single Traverse 2000 shelf. This fully integrated DCS/DXC and SONET/SDH transport
solution simplifies carriers’ networks, while providing dramatic scalability and cost advantages over legacy
DCS/DXC architectures.
